Boyle Celtic won their penultimate league game with considerable ease, away to Manor Rangers and could meet them again next week should Manor reach the semi-final of the Robert Cawley Cup. It was Celtic’s last away fixture in this year’s Super League and they set about their business from the off. Good passing from McHale, McCrann and Corrigan was putting severe pressure on the Manor defence. Chances came and went but no breakthrough. True to form, Celtic conceded without Manor having an effective attack. McKenna misjudged a back-pass and Alan Hickey finished for the Leitrim men. It turned out to be the only shot in anger towards Kyle Suffin’s goal.
Boyle replied almost immediately when Mick Corrigan clipped a ball over the defence for John Connolly to head home. The pressure was relentless from Celtic but they could not convert. Half-time 1-1. Johnny Dwyer came on for the injured Sean Duignan at the break.
The pattern of the game did not change in the second half with Boyle applying constant pressure. A great corner from McCrann created a goal for Noel McKenna. Minutes later McCrann opened up Manor again, putting Mick Corrigan in. Corrigan’s control, turn and low shot, was met however, by a fine save from the Rangers keeper. That didn’t deter Corrigan at all as he made it 3-1 on the hour mark. He created and finished the goal himself and it was a well deserved goal for him, as it capped a fine personal performance. John Connolly had to come off injured late on and was replaced by player manager Eddie Conroy. A trademark mazy dribble from him resulted in a free-kick on the edge of the box. McCrann’s effort was saved however.

Celtic Attack with a Digger !
John Connolly was the star of Boyle Celtic’s hard fought point against league leaders and favourites City United of Sligo. Despite heading home a great goal, into his own net, John Connolly produced a stirring display at the heart of Boyle’s defence. Celtic have been out of sorts recently with some very disappointing performances but against City they got back to the energetic, passing game that was the norm in the first half of the season. Other performances of note were Michael Corrigan, Colm Brennan, Aaron Calpin and a stirring display from new striker Sean Duignan.
Celtic started brightly and attacked from the off. Their defence of Corrigan, Brennan, Connolly & McKenna looked comfortable as City struggled to get going. With 5 minutes gone, Paul Flanagan picked up a ball 30 yards out and probably couldn’t believe the space he was afforded. He duly accepted the invitation to shoot and let fly with a screamer to the top corner. Boyle 1 nil up. Things were going well for Boyle and the very influential Connolly seemed to be in front of every attempt from City United. It was ironic then that Connolly in his quest to defend everything headed a ball past the advancing Kyle Suffin for a fortuitous equalizer to City. (35 mins). It didn’t phase him however because he was excellent throughout.
Both sides had good chances to score again but none were taken. Sean Duignan was proving a real handful for City’s defence and he opened up many gaps for McKillen, Calpin & Flanagan. For City United, Gareth Kelly and Keith Nibbs were a constant danger but when Kelly was given a straight red for foul language, City’s resolve seemed to fade.(70 mins). James Carty was introduced for the injured Flanagan and he added pace to Boyle’s midfield. Chances came and went and the game finished 1-1, but it was certainly far from a boring draw.

Well Beaten Yeats !
Boyle Celtic appear to have emerged from their mini slump with a very convincing win over Yeats United in Carney village last Sunday. Goals from Michael Corrigan, Brian McCrann and Noel McKenna seeing off the challenge of the sligo men in a fairly comfortable game for the Boyle side. The first half did not produce any goals but it did contain some nice football, mainly from Boyle. Yeats did contribute some good passages of play but offered very little in the final third. Kyle Suffin in the Boyle goal had little to do but claimed comfortably when Yeats got the ball into the box.
Celtic attacked with much more purpose in the second half and a deflected shot fell to Michael Corrigan who slotted home. Yeats were forced to push out for an equaliser but this only left more space for Corrigan and Calpin to exploit. Good work down the left by both, created enough room for Brian McCrann to shoot from outside the area, making it two nil. Yeats were a spent force now and it was a surprise that Celtic only added one more. Sub Johnny Dwyer, swung in a very dangerous corner and an un-marked Noel McKenna made no mistake from 6 yards. Dwyer prodded through a couple of sweet passes after that but John Connolly and Michael McHale failed to finish.
Next Sunday, Super League action again and Coolera Rovers come to Boyle. Every effort is being made to have this game played under lights on Saturday night. More news on this later in the week.

STRANDED !!! - 28/02/10
Boyle Celtic’s super league challenge looks stranded for 2010 after a heavy defeat in Strandhill last Sunday. In truth, Celtic didn’t play that badly and have often taken 3 points this season playing worse. It was just one of those days where every bounce went for Strand and against Boyle. James Carty scored Boyles goal but it was the only highlight in an otherwise dismal day for the Boyle lads.
Perhaps there was a touch of cup hangover after the Ballinasloe defeat last Sunday because Boyle didn’t start the game until it was 20 minutes old, they were a goal down and but for Chris Casey would surely have been two or three down. An overhit corner from Strand was headed back across goal and after bobbling on several heads it was nodded in from 6 inches by Donnagh Oates. Suddenly Celtic woke up and dominated the rest of the first half with James Carty netting a fine equaliser. Boyle created a couple of good chances but could not take the lead. With seconds to go before the break, Strand hit a cross from the right which drifted on the breeze, hit the cross bar and dropped in. It was going to be one of
those days.
The second half began with another kick in the guts for the Boyle men. A dubious free-kick was very well struck by the Strand player but Chris Casey made an excellent save down to his right. Sod’s law took over from there however and the ball struck the crossbar. It bounced out to a Strand player who headed up in the air, only for it to land on the crossbar and bounce out again. This time Donnagh Oates had an easier task than his earlier goal from 6 inches. As Boyle chased the game, gaps were appearing in their defence. Strand were awarded a penalty when John Connolly was adjudged to have tripped the Strand centre forward. The referee was the only person in Strandhill who saw the trip but at the risk of repeating myself, it was one of those days.
The league looks beyond Boyle now but they will have a huge say in who gets to collect the title when both Carbury and City United travel to Boyle. Hopefully Celtic can get Brian McCrann and Killian Conboy fit for the run in.
No game next Sunday in the Super League as the Oscar Traynor Cup is on.

Celtic Edged out of Connacht Cup
Boyle Celtic are out of this seasons Connacht Cup, after being edged out by Ballinasloe Town in a very tight contest. Just one goal seperated the sides and so few were the clear-cut chances throughout, that one goal was always going to decide it. It was ironic that just before the Ballinasloe goal, Celtic produced the move of the game and James Carty came within a hairs breadth of heading home Lee McKillens perfect cross. Disappointment on the day but much to look forward to, from this young team.
The first 35 minutes were controlled by Boyle Celtic but they could not create a scoreable chance in front of goal. To Ballinasloe’s credit they were well organised and looked comfortable under the pressure that Boyle were exerting. With 5 minutes remaining of the first half, the turning point of the game, from Boyles point of view, came along as freakish as i’ve ever seen. The very influential Killian Conboy, collected a ball on the edge of the box, layed it off and turned to continue the move towards the Ballinasloe goal. Under no pressure and without any challenge he crumpled in a heap, clutching his upper arm which we later learned had gone into spasm. Some time later, after a bit of oxygen, he relaxed and the arm returned to normal. Thankfully he is fine.
The incident however, proved both disturbing and distracting for the Boyle lads. They never recovered their composure or concentration after that and it was Ballinasloe who produced the better football in the second half. Somewhat against the run of play, Celtic got McKillen free down the right and his pin-point cross was missed by the narrowest of margins by young Carty, flying in at the back post. What seemed like seconds later, Ballinasloe got a very dubious free-kick and it was headed home at the front post. Celtic were a goal down.
Boyle tried heroically, to a man, to regain parity but Ballinasloes defence stood firm. The game fizzled out as a spectacle towards the end with Ballinasloe camping in their own box and Boyle Celtic unable to create an opening to take the game into extra time. It was a good experience however for the young players in the Boyle ranks.
Next Sunday Boyle are away to Strand Celtic @ 11am in the Super League.

Dwyer Wonder goal seals Valentines Day Massacre! 14/02/10
Johnny Dwyer served up a valentines day cracker as Boyle Celtic ran out easy winners against Arrow Harps from Riverstown. The final score was 5 nil but for most of the second half it was all too easy for Boyle and in truth they should have added more goals. Arrow Harps were missing several key players but put up a spirited display in the first half. The chances began to flow in the second half however and as Harps lost faith, Celtic pushed on for a bloodless victory.
A fine header from Noel McKenna early in the first half looked set to open the floodgates for Boyle but a resolute Harps defence kept them out until the break. Celtic had been applying lots of early pressure and when Harps failed to clear a corner, McKenna powered home. Arrow Harps to their credit settled in after the goal and held Celtic at bay. They also created a few chances themselves and Chris Casey had to save smartly when a long range shot almost dipped under his crossbar.
The second half was dominated by Boyle Celtic and the crucial second goal came early when Michael Corrigan was upended in the box. Brian McCrann made no mistake from the spot. James Carty was introduced on 60 minutes and soon helped himself to a pair of excellent goals. Good passing in the build-up of both and young Carty in the right place to provide the cool finish. The fifth goal proved to be the icing on the cake and what a goal it was. Under 18 starlet Johhny Dwyer, taking down a Duffy garryowen on the edge of the box and drilling a volley straight to the top corner. The stewards had a huge task to contain the crowd and stop them encroaching onto the pitch. Dwyer as is his style, calmly acknowledged the support and got back to playing. Final Score: Boyle Celtic 5 – Arrow Harps 0.
